Jessel, George

(1824-83)
   British jurist. Born in London, he studied at the University of London and began to practise law at Lincoln's Inn in 1847. In 1868 he entered parliament as a Liberal, and in 1871 became solicitor-general. In 1873 he was appointed master of the rolls. Later he became president of the chancery division of the court of appeal. From 1873 to 1883 he was head of the patent office. He was knighted in 1872.
